First, I was going in December. Then January. Then a bit later in January. (Spoiler alert: I did not go to Svalbard in December or January). Then it was February. (See previous spoiler alert). By the time my P.I. told me, \u201cSvalbard, end of May,\u201d I had grown distrustful and cynical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sure, Svalbard, pandemic allowing. Don\u2019t make me laugh. Photo by: Asgeir S\u00f8rensen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Northernmost everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not just Svalbard, but the tiny research station of Ny \u00c5lesund, largely recognized as the world\u2019s northernmost permanently inhabited community. One night, under the bright rays of the midnight sun, an expedition-mate told me: Ny \u00c5lesund, probably home of the northernmost anything-you-like: Northernmost research station (more about that later). Northernmost post office (of course, I sent postcards). Northernmost pub, northernmost hot tub, northernmost gym.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From my point of view: Ny \u00c5lesund, home of the northernmost magic. We were there when the Arctic terns arrived from their epic migration, the longest migration of any animal, from the Antarctic to the Arctic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One morning there they were, screeching and chasing each other through aerial acrobatics never matched by man\u2019s machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I saw whales \u2013 Minke and humpback, seals, reindeer, so many birds, and even a walrus (check that one off the life list!). I did not see a polar bear \u2013 and the reaction of every Norwegian: Well then, you\u2019ll have to come back. I\u2019m not arguing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And my research? Observing, absorbing, and participating in big data collection in action. Along with assorted engineering, biogeochemical, and biological projects, the expedition had the overarching goal of testing the \u201cobservational pyramid\u201d, observing a series of phenomena over time and space from a variety of platforms and at a variety of resolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ways of collecting data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are, for instance, interested in the timing and composition of plankton blooms, you could go out and sample from a boat using plankton nets and water samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data you got would be pretty patchy \u2013 you can only sample in so many locations and over so much time \u2013 and you\u2019d have to be pretty lucky to catch the bloom in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could use an underwater robot programmed either to follow the steepest gradient of chlorophyll-A which shows the edges of a phytoplankton bloom, or to take photos of the kinds of particulates suspended in the water column, from which you might be able to identify the types of zooplankton \u2013 like Calanus species \u2013 that feed on phytoplankton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might get better spatial and temporal coverage than boat surveys, but you\u2019d have to trust that the technology was doing what you expected, even as you knew it very well might not be.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"908\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/c4-Apherusa-in-action.jpg\" alt=\"A landscape photo of icy waters with snowy mountains in the background.\" class=\"wp-image-3645\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/c4-Apherusa-in-action.jpg 908w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/c4-Apherusa-in-action-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/c4-Apherusa-in-action-768x577.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 908px) 100vw, 908px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Apherusa, an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) doing sampling in Kongsfjorden. Photo: Kate Crosman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could send an unmanned surface vessel (USV) equipped with an echosounder to identify where certain organisms that feed on the phytoplankton \u2013 like zooplankton \u2013 seem likely to be concentrated in the water column.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019d get a larger sample area and maybe even a longer period, but you might not be sure exactly what those echosounder signatures represented.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/c4-Apherusa-in-action-2-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"A picture of a woman working on a boat.\" class=\"wp-image-3647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/c4-Apherusa-in-action-2-768x1023.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/c4-Apherusa-in-action-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/c4-Apherusa-in-action-2.jpg 908w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Plankton sampling<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using both traditional and hyperspectral imaging technology, you could use a drone to fly a transect over the whole fjord to show you changes in watercolor and hyperspectral signatures associated with plankton blooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you\u2019re covering a much larger area \u2013 even if only a transect of it \u2013 but the specifics are pretty foggy, and you\u2019re again limited in time. Well, there\u2019s still work to be done to answer that question in detail, but in short \u2013 a whole heck of a lot.<br>Trust?
