Photo: Dong Trong Nguyen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTogether with 22 other European partners spanning the maritime value chain, we will develop a comprehensive roadmap to identify the most cost effective and sustainable implementation of energy efficiency technologies (EETs) onboard various types of vessels\u201d, says Mehdi Zadeh, Professor at NTNU Department of Marine Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve the goal, FLEETfor55 will both evaluate new vessel design as well as retrofits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will have ten use cases \u2013 four new vessel design and six retrofits,\u201d says Zadeh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FLEETfor55 is granted 7,5 million Euro equal to 88,5 million NOK from EU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Innovative power system<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Norwegian maritime industry is a global leader in green solutions. The STEESMAT project represents another technological leap forward,\u201d says Ada M. Jakobsen, CEO of Maritime CleanTech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She continues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe EU funding enables us to develop solutions that not only cut emissions but also streamline the adoption of sustainable energy sources. I am proud of our partners, who are working together to create a more efficient and climate-friendly shipping industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"smart-block smart-block--infobox\">\n\t<div class=\"accordion\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__item\" data-accordion>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion__title\" data-accordion-title>What is Maritime CleanTech?<\/a>\n\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" data-accordion-content>\n\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>Maritime CleanTech is a Norway-based public-private partnership dedicated to developing sustainable shipping solutions and driving energy transition.<\/li>\n<li>With over 150 industry members, the organization leads numerous EU-funded initiatives that foster technological innovation and the development of new industries and value chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The STEESMAT project will develop an innovative power system based on Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC), replacing today\u2019s conventional alternating current (AC) systems, including a MVDC grid and Solid-state transformers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By enabling engines to operate more efficiently at variable speeds, the system will facilitate the seamless integration of multiple renewable energy sources on large vessels, including batteries, solar panels, fuel cells, and wind turbines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The STEESMAT system will also reduce vessel weight and overall energy consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This represents a critical technological breakthrough, positioning European industries at the forefront of sustainable maritime innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>13 partners in STEESMAT<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spearheaded by Maritime CleanTech, 13 European partners will collaborate on the development of an innovative power distribution system tailored to the needs of tomorrow\u2019s emission-free vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProjects like STEESMAT and FLEETfor55 is very important for us to maintain an active collaboration with ambitious companies, where they contribute with best practice and technological details and we contribute with cutting edge scientific methods,\u201d says Skjetne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe look forward to leading the work package on &#8220;Smart management and control&#8221; in STEESMAT where we will have dedicated researchers working for the next 3,5 years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project is expected to drive substantial emission reductions across the maritime sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>23 partners in FLEETfor55<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"583\" src=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Dong-FLEETfor55-2-1024x583.jpg\" alt=\"Dong Trong Nguyen, Professor at NTNU Department of Marine Technology, presenting at the STEESMAT kick off. \" class=\"wp-image-6937\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Dong-FLEETfor55-2-1024x583.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Dong-FLEETfor55-2-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Dong-FLEETfor55-2-768x437.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Dong-FLEETfor55-2-1536x874.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Dong-FLEETfor55-2-2048x1165.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dong Trong Nguyen, Professor at NTNU Department of Marine Technology, presenting at the STEESMAT kick off. Photo: Mehdi Zadeh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FLEETfor55 has 23 partners from all over Europe, from academia to industry, and from classification societies to ports and yards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the STEESMAT and the FLEETfor55 projects are key components of the EU\u2019s green shipping strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">STEESMAT is aiming for commercialization of the new technology by 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FLEETfor55 project will integrate a decision support system into a web-based digital platform to rapidly assess and benchmark where energy use and environmental compliance in a lifetime assessment for ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NTNU is also involved in other maritime EU projects: BlueBARGE and FLEXSHIP.
