Obviously, the space industry had a taste for it, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GOOD NEWS FOR SPACE PLAYERS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nifro.no\/en\/about-us-2\/\">NIFRO&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.andoyaspace.no\/\">And\u00f8ya Space&nbsp;<\/a>&nbsp;hand out the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nifro.no\/en\/nifro-award\/\">NIFRO-Award<\/a>&nbsp;for the best space-related master thesis every year. NIFRO announced F\u00e6rgestad as the winner at the annual Space Conference\u2019s industry dinner in Oslo on 10 May. In their justification, the Jury states that \u201cSpace debris is a growing threat to current and future low-Earth spacecraft. There will be a need to meet this threat to ensure the future exploration of space. According to the justification, \u00ab\u2026 the thesis requires the candidate to translate physics knowledge into models and compare experimental data. Issues are discussed at a very advanced level\u00bb.<br>In addition to the honour and glory that come with it, the prize is 20 000 NOK.<br>The Norwegian Industrial Forum for Space Activities (NIFRO) is the national industry organization formed to promote the interests and growth of the Norwegian space industry. NIFRO was founded in 1986 and represents a broad range of companies in the space sector\u2019s upstream, downstream, and service segments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A NEW APPROACH \u2013 WORTHY OF FURTHER INVESTIGATION&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Ny-PhD_DSC4309WEB-400x267-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-713\" style=\"width:346px;height:231px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Ny-PhD_DSC4309WEB-400x267-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Ny-PhD_DSC4309WEB-400x267-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rannveig Marie F\u00e6rgestad, has been a true space enthusiast for several years. She is also founder of Propulse NTNU Rocket Team. Now, she is well into her first year as a PhD student at SFI CASA. In her master\u2019s work, she applies a coupled numerical method converting failed solid elements into discrete elements. Then, she compares this method to experimental results and other numerical results from the literature.<br>\u00abThe method proved suitable for modelling hypervelocity impact and shows promising results worthy of further investigation through my PhD project\u00bb, says F\u00e6rgestad, who is happy, proud, and honoured to receive the NIFRO-award. .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DIVING FURTHER INTO MODELLING HYPERVELOCITY IMPACT&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Head of the SIMLab research group, Professor Tore B\u00f8rvik was her primary supervisor. Co-supervisors were Dr Jens Kristian Holmen (Enodo as), Dr Kevin A. Ford (NASA) and Tiziana Cardone (ESA).&nbsp; Now, she is one year into her PhD studies, supervised by B\u00f8rvik, Holmen, Ford and Professor Odd Sture Hopperstad.<br>\u00abI have enjoyed getting to know all my colleagues at SIMLab. There will be a need to meet this threat to ensure the future exploration of space. Here, protective shields can be a significant contributor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Experimental shocks at extreme speeds are expensive and can only be performed in a few laboratories globally, which makes numerical simulations a key tool in the development and design of protective shields.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The recent year\u2019s increasing focus on sustainability for space actors provides greater joint responsibility. We must ensure that collisions with space debris do not cause critical damage to spacecraft. Besides, any collisions create as few new fragments as possible.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This year\u2019s winner of the NIFRO award presents a valuable approach to modelling collisions.
