{"id":8261,"date":"2025-07-03T09:11:30","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T07:11:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/?p=8261"},"modified":"2025-09-05T09:58:49","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T07:58:49","slug":"nasa-researcher-to-lead-fjordlab-at-the-norwegian-ocean-technology-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/en\/nasa-researcher-to-lead-fjordlab-at-the-norwegian-ocean-technology-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Researcher to lead Fjordlab at the Norwegian Ocean Technology Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At an air show in the US, Knut \u00d8xnevad watches as two gliders emerge from the clouds and perform effortless loops before landing gracefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He realises these are highly advanced gliders and an idea begins to form: Could similar, but smaller and autonomous, gliders be used to explore Mars and the Earth in a completely new way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"smart-block smart-block--infobox\">\n\t<div class=\"box box--header-icon\">\n\t\t<i class=\"box__header-icon fa-solid fa-info\"><\/i>\n\n\t\t<h2 class=\"box__title box__title--large\">Knut \u00d8xnevad<\/h2>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"box__content\" id=\"content_block_19fb365e950acbbab325d04f2d06601b\">\n\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>From Sandnes and Bergen<\/li>\n<li>Master\u2019s degree from the Norwegian School of Economics in Bergen<\/li>\n<li>PhD in System Engineering and Analysis from Old Dominion University, NASA\u2019s \u201chome university\u201d, with a dissertation on optimising satellite design<\/li>\n<li>Worked at NASA JPL for 29 years<\/li>\n<li>Developed over 300 projects within aerospace \u2013 satellites, ROVs, and instruments during the first ten years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The albatross effec<\/strong>t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>He walks over and talks to the pilots. Now this idea is on its way to becoming a funded NASA research project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept is to use lift generated by winds in the so-called Polar Vortex and polar jet streams, combined with thermal uplift, to fly for months \u2013 perhaps even years \u2013 on Mars or the Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"482\" height=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bilde2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8249\" style=\"width:272px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bilde2.jpg 482w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bilde2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>These winds are constant, caused by the temperature difference between the equator and the poles, and by the Coriolis force from planets and moons spinning on their axes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, a phenomenon known as dynamic soaring would allow gliders to gain speed by flying over mountains, volcanoes and other elevated terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a phenomenon and mathematics that we are only just beginning to understand,\u201d \u00d8xnevad says enthusiastically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The master of dynamic soaring is the albatross. With a wingspan of 2.5 metres, it can glide over wave tops for days without flapping its wings. This allows it to travel from north of the Equator to Antarctica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A 400-million-kroner shopping list<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After nearly 30 years leading space projects at NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), \u00d8xnevad is bringing his albatross knowledge and other experiences across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At NTNU and SINTEF Ocean, he will lead the procurement of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), gliders, sensors, radars, vessels, etc., to build the infrastructure for Fjordlab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Bilde3-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Bilde3-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Bilde3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Bilde3-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Bilde3.jpg 1390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In the Fjordlab project equipment for 400 million NOK will be bought. Photo: Ole Martin Wold. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>NOK 400 million has been allocated for this purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThis is a chance to contribute with expertise to support NTNU and Norway in building a unique ocean-based research and testing infrastructure. Fjordlab will be one-of-a-kind globally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than anything, he is excited about the national and international research this new infrastructure could enable \u2013 and the collaboration it could foster between NASA and Norwegian research communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He believes the Ocean Technology Centre, with Fjordlab, has the potential to become a catalyst for extended cooperation between NTNU, NASA JPL, and other NASA centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBefore I left JPL, I had meetings with over 30 key people, including the directors of science and technology. There was a lot of enthusiasm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Space adventures<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>His career has been about seeing systems from both the big picture and the smallest detail \u2013 in order to improve them. From large systems to small ones. He believes this approach will be valuable in Fjordlab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the coolest thing he\u2019s done at NASA?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI think I\u2019m the only Norwegian to have sent a command to the Europa Clipper, a space probe headed for Jupiter\u2019s moon Europa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission is to collect data to determine the thickness of the ice covering an ocean that NASA researchers believe contains more than twice as much water as all of Earth\u2019s oceans combined. This will prepare for possible future landings on Europa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cEuropa Clipper is scheduled to arrive at Jupiter in 2030.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00d8xnevad has also been involved in developing robots that may one day travel through the ice and reach the ocean below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThat ocean is estimated to be between 60 and 150 km deep. The plan is to use a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) as the energy and heat source for these robots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00d8xnevad is fairly confident that multicellular life exists there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But now it\u2019s time to bring his wings back to Norway and help make the Norwegian Ocean Technology Centre\u2019s Fjordlab one of the world\u2019s most exciting and innovative research infrastructures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"smart-block smart-block--infobox\">\n\t<div class=\"box box--header-icon box--expandable\">\n\t\t<i class=\"box__header-icon fa-solid fa-info\"><\/i>\n\n\t\t<h2 class=\"box__title box__title--large\">What is Fjordlab?<\/h2>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"box__content\" id=\"content_block_24699c58a8720e26f69b80d2c39378e1\">\n\t\t\t<p>Fjordlab is part of the Norwegian Ocean Technology Centre.
