{"id":970,"date":"2020-06-17T11:16:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-17T09:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/?p=970"},"modified":"2023-03-27T15:22:30","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T13:22:30","slug":"ocean-based-negative-emissions-technology-research-receives-prestigious-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/en\/ocean-based-negative-emissions-technology-research-receives-prestigious-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Ocean-based negative emissions technology research receives prestigious funding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From 1 July, scientists from 14 institutions in six countries will be examining the opportunities and risks of ocean-based technologies for negative emissions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is one of 14 institutions involved in the OceanNETs project, newly funded by the EU under the Horizon 2020 programme. The EU grant totalled EUR 7.2 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humanity can still limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, as shown in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/sr15\/\">2018 special report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<\/a>&nbsp;(IPCC). However, the scenarios published in the report also demonstrate that humanity must actively remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, in addition to reducing emissions to nearly zero, in order to achieve the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2-19.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-973\" width=\"181\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2-19.jpg 200w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2-19-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Helene Muri, Senior Researcher at NTNU.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn addition to the urgently needed emission reductions, technologies including nature-based solutions that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere are also necessary\u201d says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.no\/ansatte\/helene.muri\">Helene Muri<\/a>, senior researcher at the NTNU\u2019s Industrial Ecology Programme (IndEcol). \u201cAnd the oceans could play a key role in this\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She will lead NTNU\u2019s participation in the research project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ocean-based negative emissions technologies (NETs)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Negative emissions technologies (NETs) have already been investigated for several years with regard to potential, risks and side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUp to now the focus has mostly been on land-based methods,\u201d says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.no\/ansatte\/anders.hammer.stromman\">Anders Hammer Str\u00f8mman<\/a>, Professor at IndEcol, who is also participating in the project. \u201cWe need more knowledge about ocean-based NETs. The ocean has a much higher capacity for carbon absorption and storage, with its enormous surface area and volume.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-975\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-7.jpg 200w, https:\/\/nyheter.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-7-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anders Hammer Str\u00f8mman, Professor at NTNU.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNTNU will lead the work package on model simulations, which will develop state-of-the-art representations of NETs using Earth system models, and assess impacts on not only the oceans, but also land,\u201d Muri said. She said that NTNU will do these simulations with the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe potential of ocean-based NETs to contribute towards the Paris Agreement in a sustainable way is the key research objective for NTNU\u2019s work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Paris in 2015, the international community agreed to limit global warming to two degrees C or less by 2100. In 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published a special report which shows clear advantages in limiting global warming to only 1.5 degrees C: less loss of biodiversity, fewer extreme weather events, less sea level rise, to name just a few examples. Model calculations used by the IPCC also show that this 1.5 degree goal is still achievable. To reach this target, however, all scenarios require negative emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project details<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research project is titled Ocean-based Negative Emission Technologies \u2013 analyzing the feasibility, risks, and co-benefits of ocean-based negative emission technologies for stabilizing the climate. The project period spans four years. OceanNETs has received funding from the European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 869357.
