In November, an old shipwreck was found at the bottom of Mj\u00f8sa, Norway\u2019s largest lake, in a joint mission in cooperation with NTNU and the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment. A new type of sonar technology was used.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A month later, both CNN a<\/a>nd The Times mention the findings in Mj\u00f8sa. \u00d8yvind \u00d8deg\u00e5rd, marine archeologist at NTNU, dates the shipwreck to between the 14th and 19th centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It needs to be investigated more closely to be dated more accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The wreck lies behind 410 meters depth. It is 10 meters long and 2,4 meters wide, and was found by the subsea robot Hugin.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cThe shipwreck is one of several discoveries in \u201cMission Mj\u00f8sa\u201d, which involves mapping cultural monuments, identifying ammunition and waste dumped there by the Raufoss weapons factory and others, and creating systems to monitor them\u201d, says \u00d8deg\u00e5rd, one of the researchers in the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the bottom of Mj\u00f8sa there are several known ship wrecks, and probably several that are yet to be discovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo map archaelogial memories are important, and wrecks from the viking age kan be partially preseverved,\u201d says \u00d8deg\u00e5rd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The findings the researchers were most concerned about after the last observations was not the ship that was found.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cAmmunition was discovered in much larger areas than was previously known. The most surprising thing was that a new dumping ground with a large number of aerial bombs was found,\u201d says Asgeir J. S\u00f8rensen, professor at the Department of marine technology and director for NTNU AMOS Research Centre of Excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a chronicle in Oppland Arbeiderblad, S\u00f8rensen, \u00d8deg\u00e5rd and several researchers write that several people want a Mj\u00f8s action to protect Mj\u00f8sa. For decades Mj\u00f8sa has been used as a waste site for car wrecks, industrial waste, and a lot of other things. This is badly mapped and potentially dangerous waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe long-term goal is to facilitate a sustainable use of Mj\u00f8sa, while maintaining the ecosystem. The data we are collecting will be shared with many end user,\u00bb says S\u00f8rensen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mulitiple institutions are involved in Mission Mj\u00f8sa. Among them are the Norwegian Institute for Water Research \u2013 NIVA, The Norwegian Institute for Nature Research \u2013 NINA, the Ministry of Climate and Environment and Norway\u2019s National Geological Survey \u2013 NGU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biologists involved in Mission Mj\u00f8sa are also interested in observing the ecosystems:<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cWhat kind of emissions are found from industry, infrastructure and households? How is the water quality? What significance does runoff from agriculture and the supply of meltwater have on Mj\u00f8sa\u2019s health?\u201d says Geir Johnsen, Professor in marine biology at NTNU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biologists look at life in Mj\u00f8sa and how they are affected by external conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor the first time we have used the observational pyramid on fresh water. It means that we have used satellites and drones both above and underwater to observe the life in Mj\u00f8sa,\u201d says Johnsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information is important for the policy on how to administer Mj\u00f8sa, and to take quick and correct decisions based on facts. Mj\u00f8sa is the drinking water for 100,000 inhabitants, and the outlet flows into the Oslo-fjord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMission Mj\u00f8sa is part of the AMOS\u2019 portfolio. The mapping in Mj\u00f8sa takes place in close collaboration with the Norwegian Defense Research Institute (FFI),\u201d says S\u00f8rensen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AMOS has interdisciplinary research with marine biologists, marine archaeologists, marine technicians, and engineering cybernetics involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAdvanced underwater robots, sonars and other sensors are used to map the environment in the lake \u2013 like Hugin which discovered the wreck,\u201d says \u00d8deg\u00e5rd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mission Mj\u00f8sa will develop a digital twin and secure Mj\u00f8sa as a drinking water source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
